Excellent article John. You think much the same way as I do. My recent book, Randolph's Challenge Book One - The Pendulum Swings, is book one in a fantasy trilogy and has been written from a base of my personal experiences and real life, which I have then extended following LindaSW's concept (above comment) of applying the 'what if' formula.

In fact, I don't refer to my writing as 'fantasy' now, I prefer to call it 'extended reality'. And the other important point is the aspect of humour - let's face it, life is quite funny, so why not take advantage of it.

Nice article, John. I think the old adage, "write what you know," has done more harm than good. I say, write what you can imagine and let what you know influence it, not limit it.

Ideas are all around. All you have to do is open your eyes and notice them.

Love the idea of finding the deviation. My own ideas come from the "what if" applied to every day circumstances. I haven't yet ventured into your realms of sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, but I'll get there eventually. Super piece - you know I'm a fan. Peace, Linda

I'm glad you all enjoyed the article. I don't mean to discourage all use of personal lives in fiction, but rather to encourage examining why you use it and where it holds you back. I wrote about personal experience in this very article! But for today's Bathroom Monologue? Absolutely not!

This is exactly what I needed to hear Right Now. I'm just beginning to learn to create fiction, and I've noticed my work so far has way too much of my life in it, even if they're just little snippets. I need to let that imagination loose, don't I?
Thanks for a great article John, and thank you Maria for featuring it.
