Today is the kick-off of the Flash Fiction 40 contest presented by Editor Unleashed and Smashwords. We’re accepting story submissions starting today.
You have to register for the forum (free) to post and read stories in the Contest forum.
Since we’re using an open submissions process and there’s a people’s choice element in the judging, I wanted to post the contest rules here and allow for questions and comments about the contest.
• May 18th – June 14, 2009: To enter a story: Post your story in the contest forum. Select “post new thread” which will open a text box. Copy and paste your story into the box and post your title in the “Title” box.
• Stories only please. Don’t post graphic images, HTML, commentary or anything other than the text of your story.
• Don’t reply to the threads! No commentary or replies to the stories will be allowed in the contest forum.
• Editor Unleashed reserves the right to delete any stories deemed obscene by Maria Schneider (owner and editor of this website.) Please note: Erotica is generally OK, and I don’t anticipate the need to delete any stories, but reserve the right to delete extremely graphic violent or sexual content.
• June 15 – June 26, 2009 All members of the Editor Unleashed forum will be eligible to rank stories. The popular vote will help decide the winners! On June 14th, I’ll be posting further details here on how to rank stories.
• Top 40 winners—including Grand Prize winner—will be chosen by Maria Schneider of Editor Unleashed with assistance from a select group of agents and editors.
• Entrants grant Editor Unleashed and Smashwords non-exclusive digital rights to publish their story in a digital anthology available on Smashwords and in online bookstores and websites that distribute Smashwords books. You keep full rights to your story.
• Find prize information and further details about the contest and the presenting sponsors here.
• New members: Welcome! Please stop over to the introduction forum and introduce yourself.
• June 30, 2009: 40 Winners announced!

Oh goodie, I do have a question or two! And you are the perfect person to answer it because you are the owner of the forum and have worked for WD.
I submitted a story to WD’s Annual comp and I wanted to know, if I change the POV and rearrange it (same story idea, just diff pov and a few descriptive changes) am I able to enter it here (and also, is that ok by WD’s rules)??
Hi KeMari,
It depends. If you make substantial changes to the story then it’s OK with me, but you might want to check with WD competitions department to make sure it’s OK on their end.
I was going to ask where you got that spiffy logo, but you beat me to the punch. Nice work, Kat.
Should be an exciting contest, Maria. Thanks.

Thanks for replying so quickly Maria!
I already left a msg with the comps/editorial dept to find out, so I’m just waiting to hear from them but I definitely want to cover all my bases with everyone before submitting to either comps.
And if I haven’t said so, this contest is an awesome idea. Kudos to you and Mark Coker/Smashwords for doing this!
Thanks for doing this. I’ve been tinkering with my submission for a week now.
Woo hoo! Been looking forward to this since it was announced. Thanks again for putting it together, Maria!
