Great post, Marie, thanks for sharing.

I love the sentence: "A platform-strong writer is a writer with influence."

This is a hard lesson to communicate to first-time authors. Yet, more and more, successful nonfiction authors I interview started establishing their brand with a blog, then were approached by publishers.

Examples include Gar Reynolds, who is having great success with his Presentation Zen.

Great post. I like thinking of a platform as a promise to all audiences: readers as well as agents and publishers. And it's good to get a reminder about blogging and social networking too. Thanks Christina!

Awesome post! Thanks for the reminders and the great new ideas. I have certainly found that building a platform is the second most important job I have as a writer, second only to writing, of course. In one of Po Bronson's books, can't remember which, he said that he needed to be a good steward of his work and to do that he learned as much about the publishing industry as possible. It's our job, after all.
